(Margin of error is 3%)

Obama overall approval - 44% (new low)
Obama on economy - 37%

Congress - 82% disapproval
Would elect new representative - 47%
Would stick with current representative - 42%

GOP race:
Perry - 38%
Romney - 23%
Paul - 9%
Bachman - 8%
Gingrich - 5%
Cain - 5%

Romney vs. Obama - 45% vs. 46% (virtual tie w/ Obama edge)
Perry vs. Obama - 42% vs. 47% (Obama wins)
Generic GOP candidate vs. Obama - 44% vs. 40% (GOP win)

Obama drops, Perry surges in new poll

By Holly Bailey | The Ticket

Obama and Perry (Jack Plunkett/AP)
President Obama's approval rating hit another new low, and Rick Perry has surged to the lead in the 2012 Republican presidential race, according to a NBC/Wall Street Journal poll released Tuesday.

After what could be considered the worst summer of his presidency politically, Obama's approval rating is at a new low of just 44 percent in the NBC/WSJ poll. Just 37 percent approve of his handling of the economy--a six-point drop since July. The poll's margin of error is 3 percent.

But those numbers pale in comparison to the dismal numbers Americans give Congress. According to the poll, 82 percent disapprove of the job Congress is doing--the highest number ever recorded in the poll. In what could be a hint of a major shift in political fortunes for sitting lawmakers, 47 percent of those polled say they'd like to give a "new person" a chance in the upcoming election, compared to 42 percent who would like to stick with their current representative.

Meanwhile, the race for the Republican nomination increasingly appears to be a race between Perry and Mitt Romney. According to the poll, the Texas governor, who entered the race last month, now leads Romney, 38 percent to 23 percent in the GOP race. No other nominee moves beyond single digits, including Ron Paul (9 percent), Michele Bachmann (8 percent) and Newt Gingrich and Herman Cain (5 percent).

While Perry appears to be the candidate to beat in the GOP field, he's not as strong as Romney or a "generic" Republican when pitted directly against Obama. According to the poll, Perry would lose to Obama in a projected match-up, 42 percent to 47 percent.

By comparison, Romney and Obama are statistically tied, 45 percent to 46 percent. Meanwhile Obama would lose to a "generic" GOP candidate, 40 percent to 44 percent.

President Perry? Holy shit...

You people shouldn't worry about an election that is not going to happen.

Obama will win re-election. It is near impossible to beat an incumbent that isn't challenged at their convention.

I dunno dude... Bush won a tight race vs gore. I see Perry using the same "religious right" tactics.
It could be tight.

You mean Kerry? Wasn't very tight. In the race against Gore he wasn't the incumbent. There was no incumbent as Clinton had served his 2 terms. If anything that race demonstrated that even after 2 terms a carryover from the previous admin (Gore) is very tough to beat. If Bush had a VP interested in becoming the president (officially ) Obama would have had a much tougher time against them rather than McCain.

Point being, it's pretty damn hard to be a one-term president.

I'm not talking about Kerry or incumbent elections.

IMO, apples to apples... I think Perry vs Obama is equivalent to Bush vs Gore.

Hey, remember what the poll says. Perry does not fly with the rest of the country the way he does w/ Republicans. Romney is still the leader vs. Obama. Perry performs well, but still loses by a 5% margin. I think Republicans need to choose Romney if they want to beat Obama, but they don't like him, so it's possible that they won't see the big picture, will end up picking Perry, and will lose.
Matthew 6:5 - 7

And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites: for they love to pray standing in synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, they have their reward.

I told my wife a few weeks ago... when Perry was doing his big first official "look at me" speech/debate/whatever... "honey, that's the next president of the US."

I hope to god I'm wrong but my gut usually is correct. He's what the far right want. Smooth talkin, Jesus freak who talks shit about Dems. Substance & Policy be damned. It's all in the look.

I can't bring myself to vote for either of these political parties anymore... they're a joke. I hate to be cynical about it but that's where I'm at.

I'm giving you the historical facts on presidential elections. In modern presidential history, the only incumbents that have lost were challenged at their conventions.

Carter by Kennedy
H W Bush by Buchanan

That's not going to happen to Obama.

Odds are slim he doesn't get reelected.

There's no way Obama's going to lose to any of the current crop of challengers for a second term. That says more about who he's up against in 2012 versus what little he's accomplished through his first term.

Exactly.

The Republicans need another W. A perception of being a rough and tumble type of guy you can drink with, who will stand atop the rubble of the WTC with a bullhorn, who will fight for what he believes in (Of course I understand Bush was an idiot and a puppet to Master Dick).

Instead they have Romney and Perry as their likely nominees. One is a Mormon who pushed a "socialist" health care agenda in his home state, and the other comes across like a Televangelist. Neither will rally the base.

What they need, and what the country needs, is Ron Paul's brain with Obama's charisma.

Don't like Ron Paul at all from meeting him, but I will say this he does have ideas, he does actually want to change things (for better or worse is up for the debates) and I respect that. If he didn't look so shocked from the tattoos maybe I would change my mind. So what if I have tattoos I pay taxes and work hard, I shouldn't be judged on my tattoos. (for the record its nothing offensive or anything like that on my arms)

Not that these polls mean anything, especially at this point.

Over the weekend, CBS reported that over 70% of GOP voters are still undecided.

Considering what they've got to chose from, I would assume the confusion is whether to change their party affiliation to Independent or not.

I seriously doubt polls anymore. These numbers don't seem to reflect much, or people are really as dumb as I thought these days.

Romney just needs to avoid any major gaffes and he's got the nom. I still think Obama wins re-election.

oh, surely! but the democratic party isn't currently on public display as often. the republican race has diverted media time/attention away from Obama, eh?
