Re: The Cops Behaving Badly Thread
But didn't you know that the law is only for the bad people? And cops are the ones who determine who the bad people are, right? Why would they determine themselves to be bad?SR wrote:It either diminishes the utility of the law, or sets them above it....or bothAdurentibus Spina wrote:It's ironic, since unlike most of us, they should REALLY know better...
Re: The Cops Behaving Badly Thread
Sad, but true in every experience I've ever had with them. yeah, I wish i needed an elevator down a few floors to wrap my head around that, but.....Adurentibus Spina wrote:But didn't you know that the law is only for the bad people? Re: The Cops Behaving Badly Thread
I usually just assume most people are mostly bad at most of what they do most of the time. So cops aren't that surprising...
Re: The Cops Behaving Badly Thread
I assume it for most cops, about half of adults, a small percentage of kiddos, and no golden retrievers.
Re: The Cops Behaving Badly Thread
Well, yeah children and dogs aren't people. But more than half of adults are bad at most things. 50% are just technically "below average" in any normally distributed skill.SR wrote:I assume it for most cops, about half of adults, a small percentage of kiddos, and no golden retrievers.

No word yet on children, but.....Adurentibus Spina wrote:Well, yeah children and dogs aren't people. Re: The Cops Behaving Badly Thread
Oh, well, by 'people' I meant by way of degree, not kind... It's a threshold of rational capacities. Dogs and babies and idiots clearly reason, just not as much as people, and usually not with any degree of competence. I'm being facetious in my anti-Kantian stridency... obviously idiots and children are, more or less, people, and anyway what I actually think is more pessimistic in a way: ALL people are fucked up in their thinking almost ALL the time. We're just lucky a lot of the time, too.SR wrote:No word yet on children, but.....Adurentibus Spina wrote:Well, yeah children and dogs aren't people. I have seen this firsthand.....many years ago, and am not surprised at all nothing has changed. I think this will be the tip of the iceberg yet again here in LA.

I've been to at least half the states in the union a few times over and hands down they are the WORST I've seen...SR wrote:I have seen this firsthand.....many years ago, and am not surprised at all nothing has changed. I think this will be the tip of the iceberg yet again here in LA.

Been to? I don't understand. I haven't been to many counties in corrupt states but I tend to believe ca, and la inparticular, are obscene.

I mean I've visited most major cities and been to most of the really bad areas in them, areas where the police had bad reputations and what have you, and LAPD definitely operates on a completely different level...SR wrote:Been to? Re: The Cops Behaving Badly Thread
Aha. Yes, the LAPD is horrible, but so are the LA County Sherriff's. They run the jail.
Re: The Cops Behaving Badly Thread

Re: The Cops Behaving Badly Thread
It's kind of hard to tell if they fired on him while he was still trying to get his car moving after the crash which would be a legitimate use of deadly force as a automobile is considered a lethal weapon and he clearly showed no regard for life when he smashed into that car. If they started firing on him when he got out of the car..... mmmmaybe, maybe not necessary, but after what just happened, that guy could have been up to anything when he got out of the car and the cops had a split second to react. I know if I was in that car that got T-boned especially if any friends or family where also in the car with me, I'd personally congratulate the cop(s) that shot the fucker.creep wrote:did this guy deserve to be killed?

Re: The Cops Behaving Badly Thread
yeah that's what i thought. if they were shooting at him (which they probably were) when he was in the car then that is probably justified by law. once they are shooting they are shooting to kill so once he gets out they are going to keep firing. still doesn't seem right seeing a guy shot with clearly no weapon.Pandemonium wrote:It's kind of hard to tell if they fired on him while he was still trying to get his car moving after the crash which would be a legitimate use of deadly force as a automobile is considered a lethal weapon and he clearly showed no regard for life when he smashed into that car.creep wrote:did this guy deserve to be killed?

Re: The Cops Behaving Badly Thread
looks rough...but the asshole had already used his weapon...the car
Re: The Cops Behaving Badly Thread
That car he smashed into had a red light at the intersection, which they ran.Pandemonium wrote:It's kind of hard to tell if they fired on him while he was still trying to get his car moving after the crash which would be a legitimate use of deadly force as a automobile is considered a lethal weapon and he clearly showed no regard for life when he smashed into that car.creep wrote:did this guy deserve to be killed?

Re: The Cops Behaving Badly Thread
I'm actually surprised (but I guess I shouldn't be) that the two Fullerton, CA cops were found innocent of beating Kelly Thomas, the mentally ill homeless guy to death. I didn't think they'd get Murder 2, but I did think Manslaughter was an easy conviction. The video is pretty hard to watch (linked in the story):

The real criminal is the bar manager that caused all of this, that person and the ownership deserve to be put in a barrel in the desert.Pandemonium wrote:I'm actually surprised (but I guess I shouldn't be) that the two Fullerton, CA cops were found innocent of beating Kelly Thomas, the mentally ill homeless guy to death. Re: The Cops Behaving Badly Thread
The bar is owned by some guy or guys in the band Lit. I don't recall if it was the owner that made the initial call, but it was bullshit right down the line. Whoever made the call should feel like shit for his/her NIMBY-ism, but the cops still acted with violent force extremely disproportionate to the situation.
Cops can do what-ever-the-fuck they like, it appears.
