The Cops Behaving Badly Thread

#1 Post by Jasper » Wed Oct 24, 2012 6:53 pm

Here's one to get the ball rolling:

Two officers from the NYPD 71st precinct, one male and one female, arrived and woke the man. Confused as to why he was being accosted by police, the man refused the officers’ attempts to escort him outside, insisting that he had permission to be there and asking that they allow him to prove it.

His pleas fell on deaf ears, and they proceeded to place him under arrest.

When he resisted arrest, the male officer flew into a rage and began to beat the defenseless man. As can be seen in the video below, the officer assumed a boxing stance and then lurched towards his victim, pummeling him from all sides.

Over the next couple of minutes the man is also pepper-sprayed and beaten with a truncheon by the female officer, all while posing no threat to the officers’ well-being whatsoever.

New York police officer charged with plan to cook, eat women

A New York City police officer was charged on Thursday with conspiring to kidnap, torture, cook and eat women whose names he kept in a list on his computer.

Gilberto Valle III, 28, of Forest Hills, Queens, was arrested on Wednesday by the FBI, a spokesman for the agency said.

In a criminal complaint unsealed on Thursday in Manhattan federal court, Valle was charged with conspiring to cross state lines to kidnap and with illegally accessing a federal database.

The complaint said investigators had uncovered a file on Valle's computer containing the names and pictures of at least 100 women, as well as the addresses and physical descriptions of some of them.

The complaint said that Valle had undertaken surveillance of some of the women at their work and at their home.

In an excerpt of a July conversation with an unnamed co-conspirator, Valle is quoted in the complaint as saying: "I can just show up at her home unannounced, it will not alert her, and I can knock her out, wait until dark and kidnap her right out of her home."

"I was thinking of tying her body onto some kind of apparatus... cook her over a low heat, keep her alive as long as possible." The woman in question is identified only as "Victim 1."

Valle was not charged with carrying out any of the alleged planned attacks, according to the charges, suggesting he was arrested before any of the targeted women were harmed.

This happened last night in downtown Toronto just after midnight..
Shortly after midnight Saturday, at the intersection of Dundas West and Bellwoods, Toronto police fired nine bullets at a man at close range. He was later pronounced dead in hospital.

The incident began when the man allegedly brandished a knife at fellow passengers aboard a 505 Dundas streetcar. All others on the vehicle, including the operator, fled.
When police arrived, he was still aboard the vehicle, at the front near the driver's seat. Witnesses says that after refusing police orders to drop the weapon, the man took steps toward the officers, who then opened fired.

Jeremy Ing, a passenger on the streetcar who witnessed the events leading up to the shooting, told NOW Magazine:
I was on a westbound 505 Dundas car, preparing to exit at Grace Street. I had my headphones in, so I was interrupted by the shrill screams of young girls, from the back of the car. And when I turned to see what was goin' on, some guy had stood up from his seat with his dick in his hand and also holding a knife. And then as soon as everybody recognized that, they scurried to the front of the car. It took maybe, like, five seconds or so before the streetcar driver realized what was goin' on and opened the doors up. So everybody flooded out, like disorderly, onto the street.
The guy remained on the car with the driver for a while. Eventually, maybe like two minutes later or so, the driver managed to get off and then the cops showed up and they basically swarmed it. And then they told him to drop the knife, like many times. And I guess he didn't comply or whatever, and fired off, I dunno, like eight shots or so.

A video of the incident posted to YouTube by Martin Baron shows nine shots:

It's surprising that all those cops couldn't take down 1 man on an empty streetcar. Some of the cops could have gone in the back door and tackled him or tasered him.

I guess the problem is that it's not really a cop's job to get knifed tackling a guy... It's tough... There are probably other options, but it's probably also a really really really bad idea to not drop a weapon when a cop with a gun says to do that... Not that that's a license to be killed, but... like... if I'm speeding on the 401 and a cop turns the lights and siren on behind me, and I don't pull over, and in the midst of the chase, he does that thing where they nudge the car to spin in to get the driver to stop or whatever, and I die... I'm kind of a huge idiot for not stopping in the first place.

And what if he just drives past you and just shoots you in the head? Nine times, just to make sure?

Oh, so the penalty for being an idiot is getting shot?

We're so lucky we can count on qualified policemen to be the judge, the jury and the executioner.

Mescal, I'm pretty sure I explicitly said that it's not a license to be killed... but it should be obvious that acting idiotically around cops is a bad idea because your behaviour could be interpreted in a way that implies (that is, that they could infer implies) a danger to their lives or others, and that could mean they act in ways that end with you arrested/hurt/dead... Shouldn't this just be obvious?

I really don't know man.

again, who is to say what and what is not 'acting like an idiot'. Like you said, speeding is breaking the law, so that's obvious.

But is acting like an idiot breaking the law?

There was a clip on this site (probably xiola, cause it was a few years ago). It was this fat, naked guy at a festival, acting like an idiot. There were a few cops around him and in the end they tased him.

From there on it's a matter of opinion.

You could say, he was acting like an idiot, he should have known better, he asked for getting tased.

I'd say, it was a fat, naked guy at a festival acting like an idiot, why should the cops even bother him. Leave him be. Cause people around him weren't really bothered by him, they were even shouting at the cops that they should leave him alone. And if he was really such a problem to them, they could have easily just taken him away, without tasing him.

Sorry, I felt endangered because he was acting like an idiot, so I shot him; that's just not a way of thinking I can for 100 % agree with. We're really becoming this sort of society where it's not accepted to 'act like an idiot' (or whatever you call it). The moment there's someone stepping out of line we have this reflex of saying, yeah well, he should have stayed in line. He should have known better.

Really, I just don't know man.

Not saying that I agree that someone should be naked in a bus or anything, and he should be arrested and all that. Maybe he was just really drunk or stoned or whatever. So in the end he got shot for being really drunk ...

From the information that is public so far, I do not think shooting the guy should have been the first option. I understand about the cops repeatedly giving the man the option to drop the knife and he didn't. Since all the passengers were off the streetcar unharmed and only the kid remained, I think with the number of cops that were there, they could have taken him down without shooting him 9 times. Besides guns, the cops have batons and tasers. He was trapped on the streetcar with nowhere to run. :noclue:

From CBC news

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/s ... tions.html

Security expert concerned

Ross McLean, a security expert and former Toronto police officer, studied a version of the video with enhanced video and audio, frame by frame.

He said it raises serious questions about how police handled the confrontation.

On the enhanced video, a six-second jolt from a Taser can be heard after the gunshots, McLean said. Yatim also appears to put his hands over his head at one point on the enhanced video, he said.

McLean says if the officers had waited another minute for the officer with the Taser to arrive instead of opening fire, Yatim might be alive today. "Should you be Tasering someone who’s been shot six or nine times and lying on the ground?” he told CBC News.

McLean says the video also suggests police did not engage the suspect.

"Your mouth is your best weapon," he said.

The key is to communicate with and contain the suspect, he said.

"He was fairly contained. He was in the streetcar. He could have let that guy sit there all night."

Police can be heard on the enhanced video saying "Drop the knife!" and "If you take one step in this direction, you’re finished," McLean told CBC host Matt Galloway on Toronto's morning radio program Metro Morning.

McLean said it's unlikely that any of the nine shots were warning shots.

"This officer’s going to have to explain why he used the level of force he did," McLean said

How I pissed off a NYPD Officer....

I NEVER talk on my cell phone while driving. If fact I never even take it out of my purse while I am in the car. But Friday night I was meeting a friend in Coney Island (I was driving, she was taking the subway). I went to call her when I turned onto Surf Ave to tell her I was almost there. FORGOT to put the phone on speaker and got pulled over by a unmarked NYPD Officer right under the Cyclone. The ONE time I talk on my phone....compared to the hundreds of people I see talking or texting......

So, I pull out my license and my PBA card my nephew gave me. On the back Jimmy wrote something about give my aunt courtesy or something and his shield & precinct which is also printed on the front. So I said to the officer as he was reading the back of the card "My nephew is in the ___ precinct...." he handed me my license & card back with the BIGGEST pissed off look on his face and muttered "be careful" or something.
He has such a fucking attitude. Maybe he was pissed my nephew makes 10X more that he does. I dunno :noclue:

after reading that i knew your story was heading to the "one time" you did.

that whole pba card is such bullshit. i guess i understand cops taking care of other cops up to a point but people who aren't cops that have that card shouldn't get special privileges.

It's "supposed" to be Officer & family. TECHNICALLY not an Aunt but he always says "just tell them your my Aunt" and I say no.....so he gave me the card.

In the years I have been carrying it I never used it or had a reason to use it. In all my commuting I see plenty of boneheads, boneheads talking on phones, texting, playing frogger in traffic, not using signals etc....

THE ONE TIME I do something bad there's a unmarked NYPD charger behind me. where is this cop when I was getting blown away my a crotch rocket on the Belt parkway at around 90 mph weaving in and out of traffic????

I have no idea what this card is, but I I just learned that off duty cops and family get passes on the laws the cops are paid to enforce. Um, wow.
