Evolution, Big Bang "lies straight from the pit of hell"

#1 Post by Jasper » Sat Oct 06, 2012 7:51 pm

Words fail. As explained below, this man is "a high-ranking member of the House Science Committee". I was going to add emphasis to a few passages, but then I realized that the entire thing is worthy of being emphasized. It just gets more and more insane.
Congressman Paul Broun (R-Ga.) said last week that evolution and the big bang theory are "lies straight from the pit of Hell."

"God's word is true. I've come to understand that. All that stuff I was taught about evolution and embryology and the big bang theory, all that is lies straight from the pit of Hell," said Broun, who is an MD. "It's lies to try to keep me and all the folks who were taught that from understanding that they need a savior."

He continued:
"You see, there are a lot of scientific data that I've found out as a scientist that actually show that this is really a young Earth. I don't believe that the earth's but about 9,000 years old. I believe it was created in six days as we know them. That's what the Bible says."

According to NBC News, Broun's comments were part of a larger speech given at the 2012 Sportsman's Banquet at Liberty Baptist Church in Hartwell, Georgia on September 27th. A clip of the video was distributed by the The Bridge Project, a liberal watchdog group.

Broun is a high-ranking member of the House Science Committee, of which Rep. Todd Akin (R-Mo.) is also a member.

Akin made headlines last month for suggesting that women don't get pregnant from "legitimate rape" because their bodies have "ways to try to shut that whole thing down."

As Gawker points out, Broun made headlines in 2009 for trying to make 2010 "the year of the Bible."

Broun is running for reelection unopposed, the AP reports.

We need a saviour alright... a fucking saviour from lunatic idiocy like this piece of shit excuse for a human being. :waits:

The Bill Hicks marketting bit comes to mind... I would never wish death on a genuinely suicidal person, but idiots like these career-politician fuckheads who stick their noses into realms they clearly don't understand.... really it would be better for everyone if they just killed themselves. Not that I actually think they could choose to do so...

There was also a great interview with John Cleese I recently watched in which he pointed out that a lot of the time, stupid people end up in positions of power/authority, and they're too stupid to realize they're stupid, and so they persist in being stupid and cannot be convinced to stop. (He was complaining about how stupid making Hollywood movies is, and how they get ruined by producers/etc., who stifle creativity, but the point is roughly the same.)

That's a fairly disturbing amount of vitriol based on that 1:25 length video.

I was drunk. Also, it's not based on the video, so much as triggered by it. It's based on the sheer volume (literally: the loudness) of this evangelical nonsense, and how powerful it is in American politics.

It actually doesn't surprise me. It's like when your uncle gets drunk and starts ranting against blacks and illegals.

I agree that policy should not be dictated by religion, but the intolerance for the religious by atheists sometimes is borderline scary, and ironic considering they're usually liberals that preach "tolerance" as loud as anyone.

i agree....people can believe in whatever they want to. i could give a shit. as long as religion stays out of politics but obviously that is not the case.

I'm not intolerant of "the religious". What annoys me is blatant stupidity from people in positions of power. Sorry, but that guy's comments are not religious comments, they're just ignorance from a guy who happens to (want to be) religious, put in pseudo-religious terms. That's the issue. Religious tolerance means creating conditions under which ALL religions and no religion can be "respected" as private beliefs. People like this guy have no respect for non-evangelical/non-literalist Christians or anyone of any other religion. It's really ironic to accuse atheists of being intolerant here, when the guy's own views have immediate implications that constrain the right to freedom of religion for everyone else.

Apart from this man being a total brainwashed bell end, what freaked me out was all of the deer heads behind him. I don't think "God" would be too chuffed with Rep. Paul Broun having multiple stuffed animals, that God created!!!!!, behind him on stage.

I'd love to hear Broun and Akin talk about endosymbiosis.

That would be the bees knees. :wiggle:
