Great reviews. I'd pay USD 40 to see that show.

two new songs
yeah, i realized this after i posted and went back to work... my bad.

thanks for the review, hoka. funny, as i was watching 'classic girl' from the show, i saw the blond dude front & center and thought 'that's hoka'. and it was; cool you at least got up in the front.

i am glad they're doing CG & IWFY along w/the acoustic set *not really breaking any new ground tho, 'cept for getting etty to finally cave somehow*, and this was opening night. hopefully it might get better, but i can't see how perry's voice will hold out. creep is right; maybe i've just lost the enthusiasm.

Thanks Hoka for the review.

Like Larry B. I have some initial impressions.

I bet they remove Words Right Out of My Mouth soon enough, sounds like it went over anticlimactically. I realize the show has a theater element and a backing track which locks the setlist up but since Words is at the end, it shouldn't be too hard to take out and replace it with something more memorable and exciting from their catalog.

Not too interested in the theater stuff, but the band sounds good. I bet they lessen the circus stuff as the tour goes on as well. Is anybody really going to this show for that? IMHO the only good reason for "the Great Escape Artist tour of theaters" is the hype, which gets them more promotion and a higher profile for the tour in the media. This helps ticket sales and momentum, which makes for a better show for the audience. Imagine 3/4 or less filled shows because the word didn't get out? Which seems to be the case with their new album. Packed audiences create a higher and more intense energy for the most part. Perry's carnival barking works here so I look at the circus stuff as a means.

To me, the setlist is good. This is current Jane's. To give Jane's the benefit of the doubt, or be a bean counter , I tend to count 3 Days and Ted as two songs each because of their length which brings the song total to 16  . Which is pretty much on the money for most shows I see. Although most shows I see don't cost $50 ticket but whatever. Any more songs than this and Perry's voice will be compromised even more.

It's gotta be eating away at him that his voice is failing him more and more. Some people have mentioned he needs a voice coach. If he hasn't got one yet, I bet he'll get one after the first leg of this tour. I'm no expert but I would think he needs a coach to come to a Jane's rehearsal in order to critique him on how to get through the set with a good vocal performance without blowing out his voice. Knowing when to go full throttle and also how to sustain excitement without going full throttle but still not doing the lounge thing. Maybe giving him some sort of regimen to keep his cords in shape that is geared toward the setlist.
Also using his delay even more would help too as well as any other tricks to get through the show appearing to sound better.
:oldtimer: Part of getting old is dealing gracefully with physical limitations and figuring out how to keep up and surpass the young'uns with wiser means. I kind of see that in Perry but only a little bit.

Great review Hoka.

I'm glad that parts of the show were good for you. They're so hit and miss that sometimes you don't know whether you're going to be wowed or feel lame for being there. But it sounds like you're glad you went, which is a good thing. I hope the rest of their tour goes well for everyone else who goes to see them.

Does anyone know if he has a vocal coach?

Or a voice doctor?

People like Chris Cornell have drank and chain smoked for years, but still see a professional to learn techniques to keep their voice strong.

Yeah...Cornell's voice (live) is better now than it was about 10 years ago.

when he was on howard stern he talked about that. he said he sings differently than most singers or some shit like that and that is why he has kept his voice.

Words seems pretty good live, if he is lip syncing certain parts it isn't nearly as obvious as it is on IF, Twisted Tales, ETTL, and Underground.

Jesus fucking christ he's just standing there whispering the lyrics and letting the backing track do all the work.

On the first day of the tour that is totally unacceptable.

Pretty bleak. I give him credit for hustling on stage for the last song though.

Great review, Hoka.

For those slamming Perry regarding his vox on opening night, anyone can have a bad night, especially first night of a tour. I've seen many major bands and especially singers (including highly regarded singers like Cornell) put on pretty lousy performances. I know Perry's clearly in a steady decline but he's still capable of good nights once in a while after a string of hacking through several shows. These days, it's just the luck of the draw.

Dave at 0:37 : 'is that...? no, that can't be... is he? shit, gotta plat the chorus'.

The audience seems very, VERY lame. That, or I have to blame Jane's for not being able to engage the crowd.

Unwatchable. I wonder what the other guys think of him lip-synching. Music sounds still very good imo.

I have my hopes up that with the ongoing of the tour he will improve. I am still impressed how good he sounded on the Australia shows with Eric 2010.

why do you even write on a jane's board if you clearly resent the band?

you are an over the hill, almost 50 y.o. woman. what have you achieved to constatnly shit on perry farrell?
