Re: True Detective
I thought the last one (ep. 7) was relatively decent. There was some tension, the plotting was fairly coherent, and there was some good cinematography — like Ray and Ani in the motel with the fake fireplace. On the other hand, there were times when it felt like a middling network series, mostly invo...

Re: Game of Thrones (HBO)
I'm very happy that Ian McShane (Al Swearengen) will have a small-but-important role in the next season of GoT. I don't know what it is, but it's confirmed that he's been cast. http://unrealitymag.bcmediagroup.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/al-swearengen-500x281.jpg I guess this could ki...

It's been awfully hot these last couple of weeks. My skin felt like it was on fire yesterday in my house, and it's looking to be quite hot again today, and tomorrow, and the next day, and the day after that . . .

Re: Game of Thrones (HBO)
The last season could have been two seasons, or a longer single season, leaving in a lot of stuff cut from the books. Season five felt very rushed. I don't think they quite found the balance there between streamlining and filler. They erred on the side of streamlining and it didn't quite work. I mea...

Re: True Detective
That was a bit more interesting than most (or perhaps all) of the previous s2 episodes, particularly the orgy sequence. Very interesting music during that part as well. Probably the best piece of directing this season.

Re: True Detective
I look forward to it every week, and I already said I think it's the best thing on right now, but I do think this season has a lot of big flaws, and pales in comparison to season one. That said, I'll never need a vapid television critic to convince me of this, or anything else for that matter.

Re: True Detective
Thanks for spoiling EVERYTHING, creep. I got the feeling that the shootout would, in fact, be a news event (though you wouldn't believe what sort of shit is more or less swept under the carpet by the news media), and also a major problem for the main police characters, who must have had the sense th...

Re: True Detective
This season pales in comparison with last season, on all levels. While this is true, I still think it's the best thing on right now, and it's worth watching, to me anyway. I do wish that one day I'd tune in for a new episode and be greeted with "From the dusty mesa, her looming shadow grows..." and...

What's everyone got against Frank's wife? Is she too nice? I'm not saying she's not up to something, I'm just curious why people find her suspect.
This episode was pretty decent.

Re: Now Drinking
As a detoxification procedure, an exercise in self control, and as a measure to ensure I can complete all of the work I've got to do, I have not consumed a drink in over two months. In fact, aside from one drunken dinner where I felt compelled to be a good sport, it's been almost three months. My go...

i just watched the first episode again. when frank gave ray the pic of the guy that raped his wife was that the same guy that was with the russian dude at that train thing? i assumed ray killed him but that guy looked like him. I doubt it's the Russian. Ray definitely killed the guy in the picture....

Ohhhhhh, I didn't see that he was looking at a male prostitute. I remember he was looking out the window, but I had to get some work done so I was looking away a little bit. I didn't really get that Chris Pratt's character is gay. Maybe he is. I thought he was mostly fucked up from something horrible that happened with whatever name they're using for Blackwater. I think they were calling it Black Mountain. As for the freeway and such, I don't know what the metaphor is b...

Re: True Detective
I thought Colin Farrell was doing a good job. He was also the only character I found all that interesting. Vince Vaughn is doing pretty well, but he can't pull off some of the lines that have especially bad grammar. He's got some real clunkers that come off as corny fake gangster speech. Maybe it's ...

What a bunch of miserable fucks. i'm not really sure what the fuck is going on Yeah, it was kind of messy, and they crammed a lot of characters in there. The directing was sort of choppy. It didn't really grab me right away, but it got a little better as it went. I had trouble thinking of Vince Vaug...

Think how exciting it would be if we were about to see Rust an Marty again.
Oh well, I'm not watching anything except for Wayward Pines (and I'm not so sure I'd recommend that show), so it'll be good to have a Sunday show to watch now that GoT is finished for the season.

Re: Duran Duran Tour Dates
It's irritating when bands pretend like the 90% of the US that's not on a coast doesn't exist. Not sure I'd go see them anyway, but this is becoming a trend. Tell me about it. One of the consistently best live bands I used to catch in the early 80's was The J Geils Band. They broke up around '84 an...

Don't worry about it. I'm really speaking more generally. I've run into several such reviews for the second season. Sometimes they just launch into spoilers with no warning. It's perfectly possible to write a review with no real spoilers whatsoever, but that takes actual effort. I've accidentally ab...
