Re: Anarchy in The UK - London Riots
What? Hitler didn't have a high IQ, that shit's a myth. Hannah Arendt debunked that way of thinking in Eichmann in Jerusalem . (I've encountered many people over the years who've said shit like: "If the Jews are so smart, how come they couldn't stop the Nazis from almost exterminating them?", implyi...

Re: Public/Private Space and Individual Rights
Fuck it, the US should just annex Mexico, then set up a real apartheid wall and use them as an even cheaper source of labour.

Re: Anarchy in The UK - London Riots
I just think children should be screened for mental illness and be taught social skills properly. I can recall having a "class" back in grade 1 or so, possibly later, called "Social Skills" where they actually went over basic shit... because even though *some* kids might get inculcated properly at h...

... How is that a good system?... The corporation with the billion dollar profits can hire a team of top lawyers... I can't. That's why the government is there. If companies are polluting and dumping in to water you sue them.

Re: Public/Private Space and Individual Rights
Chile's civil/military unrest ended between 1990 and 1994... I think it's time politicians leave that excuse behind (you know, "our democracy is just starting") and just start setting things straight. 1- Thou shall not discriminate against your own ethnic groups. It takes a lot longer than 20 years...

Re: Public/Private Space and Individual Rights
To be fair, Chile has a fucked up, violent, recent history. It's easy to demand that everything be better than it is; difficult to put that into practice in any case.

Re: Public/Private Space and Individual Rights
Good issue... I have to say, if I lived in a house I wouldn't like to see random people just standing there and taking pictures; however, if they are being taken from public space, I shouldn't have the legal right to formally complain about it (within a framework of common sense, of course. If I th...

you've got to be Hype. :lolol: Your vocabulary is too broad not to be. Yeah, I let Hoka know that I signed up under a new name. I don't mind still being referred to as "Hype", but I wanted to distance myself from "Hypersonic" because: a) I don't listen to Strays, and b) most people forgot that the ...

Re: Public/Private Space and Individual Rights
It's a Scylla and Charybdis scenario... on the one hand, you have the power of governmental authority (given by the Law, and legitimated by social contract theory) which can become fascism if left unchecked. On the other hand, you have the power of any given private individual or group, the authorit...

Public/Private Space and Individual Rights
I know Hoka's pretty gung-ho about Libertarianism and related ideas (privatization seems to be pretty common among neo-Libertarians...). I came across this video of something of a social experiment that seems to me to highlight the value of public property and public services: FJH9F7Hcluo It's reall...

Re: Movies
A Serious Man is a great movie. I can see why some people wouldn't like it, but I thought it was actually better than No Country for Old Men (especially the beginning stuff with the dybbuk and the ending). But then, I work in Academia, and have Jewish family.

Re: Please don't fuck up the forums
I think that Pandemonium's idea of a FAQ is probably not a good one for a few reasons: when you stipulate rules, it can encourage a certain kind of person to mess with them, "for lulz". One of the reasons Sonny's board was so great is that he found a way to strike a balance between freedom of expres...

Re: Need Some Help - PHPBB3
If you can type the initials, then there's really no problem, I think. (It took some effort to come up with a name that worked on a few levels... having two words was intentional, so it could be initialized. At least it's not MYXLPLXYX or whatever.) We should have a contest for designing a replaceme...
