Re: Coronavirus
https://twitter.com/sehnaoui/status/1247516312915439616 I'm not happy with the way police (even in Canada) have been taking advantage of this situation to push things in a fascist direction. Uganda is a bad place for gay people and women already. This situation is probably going to make it much wor...

Re: Coronavirus
It's not clear to me that travel within or between countries will resume any time soon, and that's a huge driver of economies in tourist-heavy regions. Also, omg, I just noticed the ridiculous typo in my post above. I must have written it on my phone, so somehow it autocorrected to 'contract' when I...

Re: Coronavirus
I think it's much too soon to tell what the after-effects of this will be. There are too many op-eds / analyses that contract each other right now, and a lot of that is just click-bait to feed into people's anxieties/hopes, etc. I disagree. If you read what actual economists are saying, there is a ...

Re: Coronavirus
nevermind. About 5% of Danes have now been infected, we need to get to 60-70% because at that point there's a chance that the virus will die off. People are going to be led out in groups, starting with kids. It's hard to say how long it will take to get to 70. It's not that difficult. Epidemiologis...

Re: Coronavirus
In Canada we’re not supposed to take children to the parks. A walk, keeping distant from others, fine, but they shouldn’t be using the playgrounds. I feel bad for skateboarders. Technically it’s not that difficult to get together with some friends and skate a parking lot, staying two meters apart at...

Coronavirus Cases: 1,009,699 view by country Deaths: 52,855 Any bets for for long before we hit 10 million? I'm going to say by the end of April. Scumbag move gambling on how many lives might be lost. I know you think that was clever, but what I said was about number of cases, not number of deaths....

Re: Coronavirus
Our Prime Minister is in hospital now as a "precautionary measure"....I know he is in government but how many people are admitted because of this? Zero. Something's not right. I think I read that he had had pneumonia once before when he was younger. That is a *very* bad sign, because this virus see...

Re: Coronavirus
Besides the obvious tragedy of the US handling of COVID-19, it would compound the shit out of it if Trump is reelected and the Republicans keep control of the Senate. The old saying that Americans can be counted on to do the right thing after they've exhausted all other options first seems apt here....

I can't think of a better anti-globalist lesson than cv. We won't learn from it though I think it depends on what you think is included under the header of 'globalism'. Many years ago, the husband of a former Governor General (Queen's Representative) of Canada, wrote this book: https://www.johnrals...

Re: Coronavirus
It’s not just lives. It’s the healthcare system, and the effect of system failure there on everything else. The effect on nurses, doctors, maintenance workers... unchecked, allowing this to just run away would cause more than just Coronavirus deaths. Look at state and national healthcare budgets. It...

Re: Coronavirus
Like, everyone over 50 should stay home and be careful but other than that life goes on .... This would have been a terrible idea. Do you know how many immunocompromised people and people with underlying conditions are under 50? A huge number. That's everyone with diabetes, heart disease, cancer, M...

Re: Coronavirus
NY is roughly half of all US infections. Half of all confirmed infections. That's important, because NY recently ramped up their testing way more than most other US states. The other thing to consider is that this is going to hit the middle of the country *way* harder than NY. NY has world-class he...

Re: The Lollapalooza Experience
God I feel so old. Is that what Lolla is like these days! SAD! It happened so subtly that I think anyone over 30 had difficulty noticing, but the generation below the Millenials doesn't give a shit about genre anymore. There are no "emo kids" or "goth kids" or "rockers" or "punks". Pop music and no...

Re: Coronavirus
Yeah. That sounds about right. Things are more or less reasonable until there's a breaking point / crisis point, and then it's not clear what the reaction will be. Trump is oddly non-ideological in some ways. His recent talk of the number of uninsured people being "unfair" so maybe they should incre...

Re: Coronavirus
I really, really doubt he would attack corporations. They own him (and any president in a capitalist country). He’d rather let people die. In this case, it looks like 3M wins because Canada is the source for the raw materials for the masks (but not the respirators?). But don't underestimate the deg...

Oh, and fuck Trump forever and ever! He's trying to stop 3M from sending N95 masks to Canada and other countries.Trudeau did immediately respond that there could be retaliations. For example, there are many nurses and other healthcare workers from Canada who cross the border in Detroit to work in t...

In my province, Ontario, the projections for the number of deaths is 3000-15,000. By the end of April, 1,600. An announcement was made today for more business closures, including construction sites that aren't considered essential. So, transportation projects will continue and homes that are nearin...

Re: Coronavirus
I'd be doubtful anything in North America will start going even remotely "back to normal" (in terms of reopening things and actually allowing people to congregate) until at least the end of May. It will probably be 2 or 3 years before the after-effects have more-or-less subsided. 854,000 cases now....
